Tips on what to look for when choosing a martial arts school
1. Most schools focus on one thing. Sport, art, or combat. What is your objective? Don't be concerned with the name of the style if they have what you are looking for. 2. How aggressive are the system and techniques? Is there a balance of offense and defense? Aggression does not equate to talent or skill, and too much aggression against a trained opponent is dangerous. 3. Does the school offer a convenient location and class times? If it is not convenient, will you stick with it? 4. What are the certifications of the instructor's? Can they be verified? Untraceable credentials can lead to a lack of quality instruction. 5. Does the head instructor teach the classes? If not, what are the qualifications of the assistant instructors? 6. How big are the classes? Too many students will lead to lack of individual time and attention. 7. How long has the school been in business? Start-up schools are great if they are in it for the long haul . 8. Are there a variety of things to choose from? Stand up, ground fighting weapons? Being blind to, or Ignoring any one aspect of combat shows ignorance . 9. Has the school stuck with the same program and style? Schools that change the format a lot and teach whatever is hot at the moment may be in it just for the money. 10. Avoid schools that teach new or secret techniques. People have been using hand-to-hand combat for thousands of years. There is nothing new or undiscovered.
Most schools will offer an intro offer, or at least a free class or two, take advantage of this and get to know the teacher and students. Ask a lot of questions of both the teacher and the students. You will probably spend a few nights a week with these people, it is important that you like them. |
